Inpatient

The resident will spend 2 to 4 week blocks each year on the Donaldson firm inpatient rotation. Most inpatients with HIV/AIDS are localized on the East-Pavilion of the YNHH hospital and cared for by the Donaldson Firm team.

The team includes one Faculty Attending, an Infectious Disease or HIV specialist with 1 resident, 1 intern, and 1 student. There are 2 teams every 4-week blocks for a total of 13 blocks. Most inpatients with HIV/AIDS are now localized on the Firm, thereby benefiting from the expert and comprehensive and coordinated care of ID and AIDS Program faculty. Dr. Merceditas S. Villanueva is the Firm Chief and is responsible for working closely with the Department of Medicine on the restructuring of educational experiences and team structure for housestaff.

A weekly Firm conference on Wednesdays including housestaff, hospitalist staff and ID faculty has been strengthened during the past year with a focus on HIV inpatient cases. Core HIV topics are presented every Friday at attending rounds. Incorporation of hospital operational system issues and initiatives are emphasized at the block orientations and during the entire rotation.
